For the last few weeks, Jo has been participating for the first time in one of the oldest American road trip traditions - license plate collecting. In the USA, every one of the fifty states has a different license plate (and most states even have multiple versions). On top of that, Americans love to road trip across the country. That means that seeing a Massachusetts plate in Arizona happens a lot more often than you would think. Nonetheless, seeing all fifty states in one road trip is damn near impossible. Luckily, national park parking lots turn out to be an excellent place to plate spot and so far we've spotted forty-eight states.
So which states are the most difficult to see? Believe it or not, we've seen multiple Alaska and Hawaii plates:
Alas, we have yet to glimpse Delaware or Rhode Island - the smallest states on the East Coast. We're beginning to think that Delaware is simply a mythical place where companies incorporate....
We've even started collecting Canadian plates. We've seen every one of the large provinces but neither territory. We've even managed to spot one of the smaller provinces:
We'll keep you updated on our search. Seeing all fifty by the time we head out in a few weeks will be quite the accomplishment. And if you happen to know anyone with a Delaware plate who lives in Wyoming, could you send us their address? Thanks.

Funny, I've had license plates on my car from both Rhode Island AND Delaware.
