Ko Lanta, Thailand

After the bright city lights of Bangkok, we headed south to the beaches along the Thailand's Andaman Coast. We stopped in Krabi Town and Ao Nang for a few days before heading to Ko Lanta, which we had heard was a very relaxed and beautiful island. To get there you have to take a ferry across to the island since there are no bridges connecting it to the mainland. After the metropolis of Bangkok it was going to be a change.

The main island, Ko Lanta Yai, is only 30km long and 6 km wide but it's westerly side is almost entirely white sandy beaches. Close by there are numerous small islands, coral reefs, mangrove forests and, of course, beautiful sunsets.

We found a beautiful beach bungalow complex on Hat Khlong Dao, the longest beach on Ko Lanta. Our little cabin was just a right by the beach and Annie, the manager, made sure we got the best fresh food every day - delicious!

Right next door to our beach hut there was a great little bar called the Indian. It was the perfect spot for sundowners and the owner, Paz, did nightly fire dancing. Needless to say, we spent quite a few evenings there.

Here's a short video:

Nick's aunt Leslie also joined us for this leg of the trip, taking an eighteen hour flight with three stopovers just to get there!

While we were together we took a few day trips to explore the islands and coral reefs around Ko Lanta, more on those in the next post.
