A Big Hole in the Ground

After packing up in Zion, we started the drive to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, which isn't really that far away. The drive was lovely, through rolling meadows and woodland, and then we ran into this:

Quite a hole.... The Grand Canyon North Rim Visitor Center and the Grand Canyon Lodge are about a thousand feet higher than the South Rim, so the views aren't as good, but we decided to check it out since it is only about an hour off the main road. The Grand Canyon Lodge is over a hundred years old and is perched right on the edge of the canyon. The main room and restaurant have floor to ceiling windows, and though we didn't get any pictures from the Lodge, we can assure you, the views aren't too shabby. We will definitely have to go back for a longer stay sometime. This time, unfortunately, it started to rain and there were no campsites available so we decided to move on.

The North Rim and South Rim Visitor Centers are only about eleven miles apart as the crow flies, but they actually take over five hours to drive between - something to do with the aforementioned hole. Luckily, there are a few things to see on the drive, including:

The Vermillion Cliffs:

The Navajo Bridge and Colorado River:

And and some lovely open road:
