Leaving India

After nearly two months in India it was time to head on to the next stage of our trip. Our experiences in India were varied. We loved some places and detested others. Having spoken to other travelers in this vast country it seems like we are not alone.

There were parts of India which we did not enjoy at all and we rushed to get through, Rajasthan chief among them. There were jewels like Ladakh, Dharamsala, and Kashmir, which we thoroughly enjoyed and wished we could spend more time exploring. Perhaps the only good thing to result from the flooding in South East Asia was that it extended our time in India, allowed us to visit Dharamsala and Kashmir, and thus permitted us to end our journey there with positive impressions of the country. Had we remained on our original schedule, Rajasthan would surely have been our abiding memory.

We will certainly return to India to explore more of the country. The north deserves more time than we gave it and from what we've heard from others on he backpacking route, the south is equally enjoyable. The "Golden Triangle" of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur along with the rest of Rajasthan may be everything you imagine when you think of India, but there are, in our opinion, far more beautiful, more pleasant, and less maddening places to visit.

Here's a few photos of typical India we took along the road which didn't make it into the blog posts:

From here we head to Bangkok and the South East Asian portion of our journey. We will miss the Indian food...

...but are looking forward to new cultures and cuisines (and fewer squat toilets!).
